In this Art With Em lesson, young artists will create a large, textured tree standing tall in a grassy field, then take their artwork to the next level with a magical transformation. We’ll begin by learning how to use textured brushes to build a strong tree trunk and speckled leaf-style brushes to create full, realistic foliage that feels alive and full of depth. As students work, they’ll explore how artists layer textures and vary brush pressure to make natural elements like trees and grass look more detailed and dimensional. Once the tree is complete, the real magic begins. Using the selection tool, students will select one side of the canvas and experiment with hue, saturation, and brightness to transform that half of the artwork into night — while the other side remains day. This fun technique helps students understand how color, light, and mood work together in art. Parents will appreciate that this lesson teaches advanced digital art skills such as selective editing, color theory, brush control, and creative problem-solving.
