@everyone Raising a billionaire isn’t everyone’s goal. For many parents, the dream is simpler: raising a child who can enjoy life without worrying about bills, housing, or going hungry. If we take a cue from Elon Musk’s early financial support, we can adapt a few practical steps that middle-class families can use to set kids up for financial stability and a more enjoyable life, like:

𝟭. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗮 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗳𝗲𝘁𝘆 𝗡𝗲𝘁 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆

Think of this as a security blanket for their future. Even small, steady investments over time can grow into a financial cushion that will help them with education, housing, or unexpected costs.

Let's say you invest $100 a month in an S&P 500 index fund starting when your child is born, that fund could grow to about $50,000 by the time they’re 18, assuming average returns (around 8% a year). This won’t buy them a house, but it can help with college, a security deposit, or a small emergency fund (whatever lets them get started without immediate financial stress), and for most middle-class families, putting aside $100 a month is achievable.

This small step can go a long way toward giving your child a strong start, free from some of the common financial worries young adults face. Of course, if you have more than one child, each child will need at least $100 invested.

𝟮. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗘𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗔𝗳𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗿𝗴𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗱

Elon Musk’s mother helped him through college, which allowed him to build skills in economics and physics. University can be a useful path, but it isn’t the only one, and it doesn’t have to break the bank.

To keep college costs manageable, you can start a college fund as early as you can, even if the amount is modest. When the time comes, encourage your child to explore scholarships, financial aid, sports and part-time work to minimize loans. However, we know that not every child needs (or wants) a four-year degree, and passion is a key factor here. If your child is interested in a trade or skill-based job, options like apprenticeships, certifications, or community college are often more affordable and provide strong earning potential.

The goal is to help them find a path that builds useful skills without piling on debt and shorten the learning curve as much as you can.

𝟯. 𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗺 𝗨𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗠𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘆 𝗘𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆

Musk’s early family loan wasn’t just cash; it was a vote of confidence. Teaching kids to manage money gives them the skills to handle finances confidently and make informed choices about saving, spending, and investing. And specially teaching them about taxes, as Benjamin Franklin said:

“In this world, nothing is certain except death and taxes.”

Something very valuable you can do is that by their teens, consider helping them start a small venture. It could be as simple as babysitting, lawn care, or selling handmade crafts online. Even if these projects aren’t long-term, they teach valuable lessons about customer service, budgeting, and goal-setting. Don’t forget to also teach them about the tax man from an early age and execute on it.

Another helping tool is Family-Backed Loans, so if they have an idea they’re excited about, consider offering a small loan to support it instead of just giving it to them. It doesn’t have to be a lot, even $50 for supplies can teach them about investing in something they care about and the implications (especially tax-wise) of it.

𝟰. 𝗖𝗿𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗮 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗘𝗻𝘃𝗶𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗧𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱𝘀 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗼𝘀𝗶𝘁𝘆

One of Musk’s biggest strengths is his drive to solve hard problems.

You can encourage this mindset by giving your child the freedom to ask questions, solve problems on their own, and even fail sometimes. When they run into a tricky homework problem or need to figure out how to fix a toy, encourage them to think it through before jumping in with answers. This builds their independence and confidence to tackle challenges on their own. If they make a mistake, prioritize learning from mistakes; Musk, nor any billionaire, didn’t get everything right the first time.

Show your child that mistakes aren’t failures; they’re just part of figuring things out and they are part of progress. If they tried hard, celebrate that effort, even if things didn’t go perfectly.

𝟱. 𝗕𝘂𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗜𝗻𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗱𝘂𝗰𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗼𝗿𝘀

Success often comes down to having people around who can guide, teach, and support.

Musk had access to people who influenced and supported his goals, and we can help our kids in similar ways, even on a smaller scale.

A mentor doesn’t have to be a formal coach. It could be a family friend, a teacher, or even a local business owner willing to share some advice. Mentors can open kids’ minds to new possibilities and offer guidance when they face tough choices. Simple things like introducing themselves confidently, asking good questions, and listening actively can make a big difference. These skills help them build connections that can open doors down the line.

Networking is key in today’s world.

𝟲. 𝗠𝗮𝗸𝗲 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹 𝗟𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘆 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁 𝗼𝗳 𝗙𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝘆 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲

To enjoy financial freedom, kids need to know how to handle money. Teaching them the basics doesn’t require extra money or special skills, just time.

✅ Set up a savings account in their name and encourage them to put a portion of their allowance or birthday money in it. Talk about:
- Interest
- Setting goals
And the importance of having a little saved up for bigger needs down the road.

✅ Introduce basic investing when they’re old enough, guide them through their first small investment.
It could be as simple as a stock in a company they like. This shows them how investing works and that wealth can grow over time with patience.

✅ Teach them about taxes, especially international taxes, because the first step is to make the money, and the second is to keep it.
Amazon, a multibillion-dollar company, payed 0 or almost no tax thanks to smart tax strategies. How about that?
Billionaires don’t pay taxes; they know the game and use debt to their advantage.

✅ Also, teach them to get in debt only for passive assets. Teach them to leverage economic tools like trusts, LLCs, and similar strategies, and really ingrain in their minds that they should not get debt for commodities. For example, buying a car or consumer goods on credit isn’t the same as investing in a rental property.

𝗥𝗮𝗶𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗙𝗶𝗻𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗦𝗲𝗰𝘂𝗿𝗲, 𝗪𝗲𝗹𝗹-𝗥𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗞𝗶𝗱𝘀

Helping your child avoid financial stress doesn’t require a huge bank account. By building small but steady investments, supporting education, encouraging money management, teaching them about the politics that can affect them, and helping them find mentors, you’re giving them a foundation for a stable and comfortable future. Whether they become wealthy or just live comfortably, these steps prepare them to make smart choices, seize opportunities, and enjoy life without constantly worrying about money.

These actions don’t guarantee any specific outcome, but they provide a real chance for your child to grow up free from common financial pressures, with the confidence to live life on their own terms.
